HELPING GIRLS DISCOVER THEIR IDENTITY AND VOICE By Ojonimi Precious Atule

As young girls, one of the questions we are often asked is, “Are you a boy or a girl?” The
answer comes easily: “I am a girl.” But the next question, “How do you know you are a
girl?” reveals something deeper. It highlights just how important self-discovery and
identity (physical and mental) truly are.
Having an identity is not enough; understanding it and discovering one’s voice are
equally important. More often than not, girls are told to be quiet, to fit in, and to shrink
themselves. Over time, this can affect their confidence and self-worth. This is why every
girl deserves the confidence to express herself and a clear understanding of who she is.
It is one of the most powerful ways to empower girls to lead confident and purposeful
lives.
THE IMPORTANCE OF IDENTITY FOR YOUNG GIRLS
A girl’s discovery of her identity is a gateway to her overall development. Through this
process, she builds self-esteem, learns to make independent decisions, and begins to
trust in her ability to achieve positive outcomes.
It also strengthens her emotional resilience—the ability to adapt to stressful or difficult
situations and recover from them. With a strong sense of identity, girls are better
equipped to resist peer pressure. They develop the confidence to stand firm against
actions or opinions imposed on them by others.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR A GIRL TO DISCOVER HER VOICE?
Discovering one’s voice is closely tied to discovering one’s identity. It involves learning
to express thoughts and opinions clearly and confidently.
In many African societies, girls and women are often discouraged from speaking up.
Even in school settings, a girl who puts herself forward for leadership may face criticism
simply for being outspoken. This is why it is crucial for girls, from a young age, to
embrace who they are, speak confidently, stand up for themselves, and do so without
fear or diminished self-esteem.
Self-awareness also plays a key role. It allows girls to understand who they are and what
they want. Being self-aware means looking inward to recognize and understand one’s

thoughts, feelings, and actions, as well as being aware of how others may perceive you.
When a girl is self-aware, she makes better decisions, and with better decisions come
confidence and positive outcomes.
However, many girls struggle with this due to cultural expectations that encourage
silence or submission, limited access to mentorship or role models, social pressures and
stereotypes, and a lack of safe spaces where they can freely express themselves.
WAYS TO HELP GIRLS DISCOVER THEIR VOICE AND IDENTITY
There are several practical ways to support girls in discovering their voice and identity:

  • Encourage open conversations: Create safe environments where girls can
speak freely without fear of judgment. There is nothing more powerful than being
    heard.
  • Provide mentorship: Young girls often look up to someone they aspire to
be like. Positive mentors can help them recognize their potential and guide their
    personal growth.
  • Celebrate individuality: Girls should be encouraged to explore who they
are—their interests, talents, and passions. These differences are what make each
person unique. Every girl should feel free to be her true self without pressure to
    conform.
  • Engage supportive organizations and communities: Partnering with
organizations dedicated to empowering girls can make a significant impact. For
example, the Butterfly Foundation for Girls focuses on mentoring girls, building
confidence, supporting female education, and providing leadership training.
When girls discover their voice, they become leaders, innovators, and changemakers.
When they are encouraged to speak, dream, and define who they are, they grow into
confident individuals capable of shaping a better future for themselves and their
    communities.
